Thenacho, H. N. C., Patel, R. G., Singh, S. P., Astley, R., and Parsons, C. G. (1973). Thorax, 28, 448452. Transposition of the great arteries. A review of 37 cases after Mustard's operation. Thirty-seven children with transposition of the great arteries have undergone Mustard's operation in Birmingham Children's Hospital from May 1968 to December 1971. Thirtythree of these had simple transposition of the great arteries and four were complicated. All but two had had some previous palliative procedures. Ten patients died before discharge from hospital and there were two late deaths, one after three months and the other after eight months. Bleeding, dysrhythmia, and hypotension were common immediate postoperative complications, while recurrent heart failure and persistent atrioventricular block occurred in five and four patients respectively.

Echocardiographic visualisation of the interatrial baffle after Mustard's operation.

Thirty children aged from 7 weeks to 14 years were examined by echocardiography after Mustard's operation for transposition of the great arteries. Discrete and persitent echoes were noted within the original left atrial cavity and contrast echocardiography was used to establish that these originated from the interatrial baffle. In the presence of caval channel obstruction, caused by malposition...

Late development of pulmonary venous obstruction following Mustard's operation using a dacron baffle.

Three patients developed late pulmonary vein obstruction (PVO) following Mustard's operation for transposition of the great arteries. In all three the absence of PVO had been documented by an earlier postoperative cardiac catheterization. At reoperation shrinkage and kinking of the dacron baffle was evident. After Mustard's operation, patients should be observed closely for symptoms and signs o...

Intermediate to late term results of Mustard's procedure for complete transposition of the great arteries with an intact ventricular septum.

Overall survival after Mustard's operation was assessed in 130 patients with complete transposition of the great arteries and an intact ventricular septum who were operated on at the Brompton Hospital in the 12 year period from January 1974 to December 1985. Actuarial analysis showed a survival at five years of 79.1% (25 deaths in 130 patients). Half the deaths occurred within a month of operat...

Cardiac rhythm and conduction before and after Mustard's operation for complete transposition of the great arteries.

SUMMARY Between 1973 and 1978, 120 patients with transposition of the great arteries had a modification of Mustard's operation designed to avoid damage to the sinus and atrioventricular nodes. Of these, 88 had an atrial baffle alone from which nine hospital and four late deaths occurred (total mortality 14.8%); 32 had additional closure of ventricular septal defect and/or relief of left ventric...
